Senior Group Assistant/Age Group Swim Coach 

Assistant Swim Coach

 

 

Position Summary:

The Lakota Family YMCA is seeking an enthusiastic and responsible Assistant Swim Coach to guide and develop age-group swimmers in a positive, fun, and competitive environment. The coach will be responsible for designing and leading daily swim practices, creating a season training plan, attending swim meets and practices, and fostering an inclusive team atmosphere that supports swimmer development at all levels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead daily swim practices for a designated age group, ensuring workouts align with swimmers’ development and team goals.
  • Write structured practice plans and a comprehensive season plan tailored to the age group and skill level.
  • Provide stroke technique instruction, race strategies, and training feedback to all swimmers.
  • Attend and actively participate in swim meets, team functions, and coaching meetings as scheduled.
  • Promote a safe and positive environment that supports personal growth, teamwork, and YMCA core values.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and swimmers regarding progress, meet entries, and team events.
  • Ensure compliance with YMCA policies, including safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • ​​​​​​​Serve as a positive role model and mentor for swimmers.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Ability to obtain YMCA swim coach training (or currently certified).

  • Must be able to pass a background check in accordance with YMCA requirements.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the following certifications (training may be provided):

    • Lifeguard Certification

    • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer

    • First Aid Certification

    • Previous competitive swimming and/or coaching experience preferred.

    • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

    • Ability to lead and motivate swimmers of varying abilities and ages.

Compensation:

Hourly rate based on experience and certifications. Opportunities for professional development and advancement within the program.


Swim Lesson Instructor
Requirements:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
  2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  3. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  4. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
  5. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  6. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  7. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  8. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum age of 15.
  2. Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  3. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen Administration certification required within 45 days of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Medium work. Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.
  • Frequently subject to environmental conditions- heat and humidity both inside and outside. May occur mostly outside. Frequent standing, sitting, stooping, kneeling, swimming, and crouching throughout the work shift. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Use hands and fingers for fine motor skills frequently. Walking on a variety of uneven surfaces and climbing stairs frequently.
  • Have visual acuity to determine safety and security of participants in the program as well as the facility. Receive detailed information through sound as well as express through spoken word.
  • Read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and other documents.

KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • · Age 16 and older
  • · Pass the American Red Cross Pre-Requisites
    • · 300 yard swim
    • · 2 minutes tread using NO hands
    • · 10lb brick retrieval for the deep end of the pool in 1 minute 40 seconds.
  • · Hold an American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard Certification. IF YOU DO NOT HOLD A CERTIFICATION WE WILL HAVE A TRAINING FOR YOU! 
  • · Able to present self as a dependable professional
  • · Able to maintain a safe swimming environment for all swimmers of all ages
  • · Able to work in a team based environment
  • · If hired we will cover the cost of your training with a commitment from you of 6 months.
